Kinja'd!!!

I was perusing some of the front page articles and started reading some of the comments in this one:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I know, I know don't read the troll bait...... I'll reserve my comments to here....

What bothered me was how people who modify their vehicles seem to get lumped together as a bunch of clods...... News flash; some of us do indeed do some research before we go out and spend our hard earned cash on swapping out an fully functional existing part for another that will work differently (hopefully better. I research a lot so it's been better almost always).

Here's a brief explanation of why I modify SOME of the vehicles I own ( I don't modify them all — it IS easier to procure parts for a stock vehicle quickly in an emergency situation).

Like many here, I'm a speed junky. More power = better for the most part. There ARE exceptions. I'm not gonna throw a 2 stage 350 shot of nitrous on a stock Ford 5.0 from the late '80's. That's something you do if you want to see how many pushrods you can eject through your hood on a quarter mile run at the dragstrip. But, hey a head, cam, and intake swap on an older V8? A supercharger install with reasonable levels of boost? Yeah, no biggie. Suspension changes to get rid of some of the inherent mushy ride? OK. I'll pay for a quality part though and not the bargain basement cheapie Ebay special. Many who modify will do the same.

I also know that installing $1,000 worth of parts on a car valued at $5,000 will not magically make the car worth $25,000. I'm also not modifying a car to sell it. I'm modifying it for my enjoyment. One day I MAY sell it and because of that, I will do my best to keep said modifications tasteful and appealing to as many persons as possible. I'll also keep records of the modifications. I have the part #'s of EVERYTHING I've modified. I have most of the paperwork and brochures for the parts as well......

Look, I can TOTALLY understand why when purchasing a vehicle one would want to find an unmodified version. Fear of the unknown is justified with used cars, but it should not be an absolute. You can usually tell what's NP or CP with a modified car if you're willing to look and ask a few questions. Not all of us who modify are hacks.

Thanks.

I got a $4K car for less than $3K because of the stupid mods it had.

It has been awesome.

Seriously, I driven it 98,000 kms, and it has depreciated to about $1500 now.

My depreciation rate is approximately 1.5 cents per km or 2.4 cents per mile.

Winner, winner chicken dinner.

Define "stupid mods" please. I'm curious.

I'm going to take this time to share a ' friends' car.

I'm not big on modifying or Mustangs if I'm honest, but I can give credit where it is do.

4 point racing harnesses mounted to the bottom of the rear seat, after market clutch, shifter, clutch boot, seats, suspension (lowered and rock hard) fart cannon (the most cannoniest) after market wheel, painted engine block, blue tubing all over the engine, and air intake.

Not bad. The mismatched seats would bother me. Both or not at all for me.

...and some of these are why people are indeed wary of modified cars.

Meanwhile I bought it...mostly because it was very very loud. I like loud things.

For me personally, it depends on the vehicle and what I might do to it. If its a new vehicle, I'll never do anything drastic to it. Maybe something to increase the functionality, but nothing that isn't reversible.

Now, if its a used vehicle, I'll do whatever I want, because I'm not worried about resale. Even then, though, it won't be dumb mods like neons or giant wheels. Probably the biggest "mod" I ever did was exhaust and headers to my S10 pickup. And that was partially because I needed a new exhaust anyway.
